Do Solar Battery Chargers Really Work? - Yes They Do.

When you are experiencing issues with keeping an automotive battery charged a solar battery charger can be an excellent option. These chargers use the sun’s rays to create voltage to charge, or maintain, a battery. Watch the video down below and let Paul explain what a solar battery charger can do for you.

Can You Leave a Solar Battery Charger On All The Time?

Yes. The solar battery tender will produce a trickle charge that will either slowly (and we do stress slowly) charge the battery or keep the battery fully charged (topped off). Using this all the time will not hurt your automotive battery.

Can You Over Charge a Car Battery With a Solar Charger?

As a general rule, a solar panel that has a charge controller will NOT overcharge the battery. The charge rate depends on the solar panel voltage, the output current, and the battery voltage. Overcharging is eliminated by using a solar charge controller. A 10 amp solar battery charger does not produce enough current that would damage the battery.

How Long Does It Take To Charge a Car Battery With a Solar Battery Charger?

Great question. The solar battery chargers we sell are 10 amps. It would take 10 hours in direct sunlight to charge from 0 volts. These are great to keep your automotive battery charged and ready for use.

How Much Does a Solar Battery Charger Cost?

Generally, a quality solar battery charger will run from $40 - $60 dollars for a 10 amp model. The more amps you purchase, the larger the solar cell, and the larger the price. For automotive purposes in just keeping a battery ready for use, the 10 amp model is perfect.

How Many Volts is a Car Battery?

Looking to find how many volts a car battery has? A good car battery will have 12 Volts. If the battery has not been drained you can see by the voltage what is wrong with the battery in most cases.

Good Car Batteries Have 12 Volts

Good Car Batteries Have 12 Volts

If you test 11 volts for example, the battery is most likely discharged. Now, this is where things get odd. Car batteries fail in most cases when a cell in the battery gives out. There are (6) cells in each car battery. Each of the cells gives out (2) volts. So if you multiply 6x2=12. Six cells at two volts each is twelve volts. So if one cell goes bad in the battery, you will know if you test the battery at 10 volts.

This is an assistive way to trouble shoot your car battery. The best way to test is to first charge the car battery, and then conduct a CCA (Cold Cranking Amp) test. This is done with a automotive battery tester. You can take it to any mechanic and they should test it for free. Be careful as some dishonest mechanics will attempt to sell you a battery even if your battery is still good.

There are a few different chargers that you can buy. The type you will need is will depend on the use you will purchase it for. The faster and more demanding charge will require a higher amp - like a 40 amp charger. How Long Does a Car Battery Last?

It never fails to get a call from a customer that their car battery has pretty much just given up all hope on starting the vehicle for them. And when we send a technician out. Almost always, we get the inevitable question of how long do car batteries last? I generally tell people that a car battery should last anywhere from two to five years.

Reasons Why Batteries Do Not Last as Long…

Some things will hinder a car battery from lasting two to five years. One reason is going to be the usage of the battery. Suppose you're just going to park your vehicle and you're not using the battery. In that case, you're not starting it, driving the vehicle that can cause the car battery to actually fail faster because what happens is the voltage in those cells, the pleats, and it causes the cell in the battery to go back up. Now, with that being said the aspect of a car battery being under the hood, we've noticed that that actually causes a quicker progression of failure for the car battery. Just imagine being stuck under the hood next to a hot engine for hours. Yeah, it's not pleasant and it's not pleasant for your car battery either. I promise you that. So with heat, heat can kill your car battery faster. We're noticing that vehicles, they have the car battery under the driver or the passenger seat or lasting a lot longer than batteries that are underneath the hood. And in terms of where the batteries located, we're noticing that the ones under the hood die the fastest, the next would be the ones in the trunk because they're still getting heat. And then we're noticing that the ones inside the vehicle are actually lasting the longest.

How To Make Your Battery Last Longer.

If you're not going to use your vehicle battery. Frequently, if you're not going to use it every few days, I would highly suggest getting a battery trickle charger. Now, these can be purchased at any store. You can go to Amazon and you can buy it at Wal-Mart. You can usually find them at Home Depot anywhere. A trickle charger should generally run you between 20 and 40 dollars. If you're just going to use it for your vehicle, you don't need special bells and whistles on it. That's going to do you just fine, I promise, if you need somebody to come out and replace your battery, I have a ton of technicians here at the Mobile Battery Squad that would be happy to deliver and install your new battery. Again, this is Paul with the Mobile Battery Squad. I Hope that answers your question about how long a car battery lasts.
